Dreaming of Greener Pastures?

Ducklings

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

-Oscar Wilde-

This week’s quote has me thinking how much time we spend projecting ourselves into the future. We fixate on how and who we’ll be one day. We look at others who we perceive to be more successful, more wealthy, more spiritual, more anything really, and we have the thought, “I want to be like that.” There is nothing wrong with that sentiment from time to time, and in fact it can be motivating, but we must be careful.

Ultimately, that type of thinking, especially if it becomes persistent, is self deprecating. We desire to be something or someone other than we are in this moment. We think if we could only get to this or that place, or when we learn how to be this or that way, then we’ll be happy. But getting there or becoming that starts now.

When we imagine ourselves grazing in greener pastures in some timeless future, we are imagining a two-dimensional entity that cannot possibly encapsulate the vast beings that we are. We are imagining a time and a person that does not exist.

Becoming the person you desire to be is not about building yourself into some solid, indestructible force. It is about acknowledging oneself in this moment, tearing away all of the tough layers, laying the cards on the table, and fearlessly revealing your truest nature.

Wishing you limitless depth of mind and spirit.
