Choice: The Key to Liberation

The Buddha said, “Whatever one keeps pursuing with his thinking and pondering, that becomes the inclination of his awareness.”

I’ve spoken about the power of the human will more than a few times. The capacity to choose is our greatest and, sometimes, most detrimental asset. Every choice we make tweaks the arc of our journey. One can conceptualize this and say he understands, but we must ask ourselves, do we really understand? We live in a world where acting unconsciously is the norm. We want what we want when we want it. We seek comfort, security, wealth and we forget the rest. None of these things are good or bad. They are just things. But, when we attain these things, we often sink further into unconsciousness, trapped in habitual routine that can be detrimental to our inner well-being. The key, as always, is presence. There must be introspection; a practice of mindfulness and awareness so that we may spread it into all aspects of our lives. Only then do we find peace and bliss.
